Benefits of the Proposed Changes

The proposed changes are offered to improve the representation and city services of the citizens of our city.  Will encourage community leaders and stakeholders to become involved in the electoral process.    Click on the link for a Toledo Blade story on the South / West slant of council representation on Toledo City Council.

Click here for a current council map showing where your councilmen live.  See for yourself large areas of Toledo are under-represented.

Councilmen will have smaller districts to represent, thus improving their effectiveness in addressing the economic development needs and problems of their district.

The changes will result in better decision-making.  A twelve-member body can be unwieldy and result in tie votes.

Reduction of Council staff and elected official’s salaries will result in cost savings to the city.

Eliminating 4 members   Eliminating 5 members

Council Salaries $110,000   $137,500

Medical Insurance $61,314   $70,073

PERS Contribution $52,746   $57,614

Reducing Staff $188,000   $188,000

Total Savings $412,060   $453,187

Based on 2006 budget numbers

Staggered terms will be eliminated but could be re-established again with odd numbered districts running in one year and the even numbered districts running in the next odd year election.
